Eierpunsch - a warm egg punch cocktail that will make you feel cozy wherever you are. A Christmas market favorite, a great New Year's Eve treat, and a popular alternative to Glühwein.
Once the temperature drops below zero, it is time to make this classic German winter drink. You can drink it at a Christmas market, in a ski chalet, or simply at home with friends. I find the latter the best. Ideally on a cold winter night, in your garden or balcony with a clear starry night.
What is Eierpunsch
Eierpunsch is an alcoholic beverage made with Eierlikör, white wine, orange juice, and vanilla flavoring. Often it is topped with some whipped cream and sprinkled with cocoa powder.
"Eier" is the German word for eggs. "Punsch" is the German word for Punch, an alcoholic mix-drink. You pronounce it AY-ER-PUNCH.
Eierpunsch is a German egg-based cocktail. A ready-made bottle of Eierlikör is an optional, convenient ingredient. It may not be too easy to get hold of abroad. Thankfully the homemade Eierlikör recipe is super easy and I already posted it on my blog.
What is the difference between Eierlikör and Eierpunsch?
Eierlikör is an ingredient of Eierpunsch. They are very similar, but the main difference is that Eierlikör is subject to European liqueur guidelines. This means that it needs to have at least 14% alcohol content.
Eierpunsch vs Eggnogg
Eierpunsch is very similar to the American and British Eggnogg. The main difference is that Eggnogg uses whole eggs, (egg yolk and whites) whereas Eierpunsch is only made with egg yolks.
Eggnogg is made with cream and milk, whereas Eierpunsch is a mixture of egg liqueur, white wine, and orange juice.
How to make it?
This egg punch recipe is really simple to make. Just make sure you only warm up the ingredients. Do not boil the the ingredients as otherwise you will end up with "scrambled egg punch"

Recipe Variations
This recipe can be easily adapted to your own taste. Why not add a cinnamon stick (affiliate link) to the mixture while you are heating the egg punch? Alternatively, you can use spices such as nutmeg, anise, or Lebkuchen spice to your Eierpunsch.
How to serve
This cocktail is often served in tea glasses or Christmas mugs. It is up to you how you want to sip it. It is popular to add a straw to the cup for your enjoyment.
